2019 Tour de Taiwan stage 5
The fifth and final stage of the race was also the longest at 192km, and although generally flat it was always going to be a test. With bonus seconds available on the road and the GC very tight the stage remained extremely important.
Prior to the stage Ed Bradbury sat in 7th on GC, and so the plan was to animate the race early on ensuring that the team were present in any moves, but always with an eye on Ed claiming some bonus seconds to hopefully move up the GC on a stage that was always likely to finish in a bunch sprint.
The opening hour of the race saw a lot of aggression with team being active, and were ultimately successful in getting both Sam and Ed into the days break, from which Ed picked up a time bonus at one of the hot spot sprints that could have eventually proved vital.
With 40km of the stage remaining the break was reeled in as the race arrived at the finishing circuit. Attacks came and went but the stage finished as expected with a bunch sprint. Ed’s time bonus however secured 7th on GC at only 15 seconds off the yellow jersey in what was a very tight Tour de Taiwan, and caps off a solid race from the team with some great riding in support.
